The Cleveland Browns have traded Carlos Hyde. But they will miss him more than they realize.

The Cleveland Browns will be giving Nick Chubb more carries. But as Browns fans rejoice at the opportunity to see more Chubb, the incredible impact Carlos Hyde had on the game will be missed.

The Browns traded starting running back Carlos Hyde to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2019 fifth round pick. To date, Hyde has been the workhorse back who grinded out yardage consistently throughout the game.

His play was so consistent and solid that even with head coach Hue Jackson promising more carries for Chubb, Hyde was able to continue getting the carries.

Hyde’s is a case where statistics do not do his performance justice. He gets a lot of carries. He is worked heavily. He has led the league in carries so far this year. His yards per carry average has been suspect. This has led fans and media alike to claim that Hyde’ is an ineffective running back.

But this is far from the case. Carlos Hyde was extremely effective. His value lied in his ability to break tackles.

He consistently turned losses into gains. He would often be hit in the backfield only to turn that play into a five or six yard gain.

Backs like Hyde are invaluable to an offense. With Hyde, a second and ten could easily be a second and five. His ability to create yards out of loses kept this offense moving. He carried the Browns rushing attack on his shoulders.

Few people appreciate Hyde’s contribution on this level. I am sure his offensive line appreciated his play. Todd Haley seemed to be a huge fan of his ability to create something out of nothing.

With Hyde out and Chubb in, it is uncertain if Chubb will be able to produce at the level of Hyde. Sure, he may break a play or two and beef up his numbers.

But will he be able to grind out the hard yards that keep an offense on the field? The Browns will miss Carlos Hyde. They will miss his ability to grind it out.

Good luck Carlos Hyde. The Browns will miss you.
