Three players the Cleveland Browns should consider trading away
By Dan Justik
Defensive Back Briean Boddy-Calhoun
Had the Browns traded Briean Boddy-Calhoun earlier in the season, it would have made a lot of sense. The Browns had many options in the secondary and they were hardly using Boddy-Calhoun on defense. But with the rash of injuries in the secondary, Boddy-Calhoun now has a bigger role in the defense.
Boddy-Calhoun started the season as the team’s nickel cornerback. But after he was picked apart by the Steelers in the season opener, Boddy-Calhoun practically had no role in the defense and primarily played on special teams.
But after injuries to Terrance Mitchell and E.J. Gaines, Boddy-Calhoun played most of the Buccaneers game as the free safety while Damarious Randall moved to cornerback. If Gaines is cleared to play before the trade deadline, Boddy-Calhoun could once again become expendable. Mitchell also said he plans to return before the season ends.
Boddy-Calhoun showed that he can be one of the league’s better nickel cornerbacks. He did struggle against the Steelers during the first week of the season, but defensive coordinator Gregg Williams may have pulled a quick trigger in benching him.
There are multiple teams across the NFL that need help at cornerback. There are some big-name options reportedly available at the position, but teams may decide to go with a cheaper option instead of trading multiple draft picks.
Boddy-Calhoun is due to be a free agent at the end of the position, so teams may not be willing to offer more than a mid-round pick for him. But if the Browns can get healthier in the secondary, Boddy-Calhoun’s role could diminish back to nothing. So instead of keeping him as a backup, it would make sense for the Browns to get some value out of Boddy-Calhoun by getting draft assets.
