Despite a 26-23 loss in overtime, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has won the NFL’s Rookie of the Week award for the second time this season. With this win, the Browns have collected five out of a possible seven awards this season.

This Cleveland Browns draft class, am I right? What a draft John Dorsey and the Browns’ brain trust had, coming away with Baker Mayfield and Denzel Ward in the first round.

Not even halfway through the season, both Mayfield and Ward have each won the NFL’s Rookie of the Week award twice.

Baker Mayfield, who won his first Rookie of the Week award in Week 3 against the Jets, lit a fire under the Browns in the second half of their week seven contest. Despite falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in overtime (to a 59-yard field goal, no less), the former Oklahoma Sooner brought the Browns oh, so close to victory.

More from Browns News

The Browns are just a couple of pieces, and possibly a couple personnel changes, away from being a legitimate NFL squad.

The acquisition of Mayfield with the first overall pick in 2018 seems to be a great addition, as the No. 1 pick is one of the frontrunners for the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.

As the NFL rapidly hurtles towards the annual trade deadline, Mayfield has shown near-constant improvement. If the Browns really got their guy in Baker Mayfield, they need to concern themselves with putting pieces around him for the future.

Whether by trade, draft, or free agency, Baker’s Browns need help on offense. Which, really, makes this all the more impressive.

Mayfield is doing so much more than expected as a rookie, with not a whole lot of offensive talent. He netted his second rookie of the year award without his favorite target in Rashard Higgins, and without veteran running back Carlos Hyde on the roster.

dark. Next. Dorsey should have Arizona on speed dial

Yet, the Browns just keep chugging along with Mayfield under center, and his efforts to put the Browns on his shoulders en route to wins are being rewarded. Congratulations, Mr. Mayfield. You deserve every bit of this one.
