Cleveland Browns: John Dorsey should have Arizona Cardinals on speed dial
The Cleveland Browns made many moves this offseason and already this regular season as well. But they shouldn’t be done. John Dorsey should fill the holes that are on this squad from injuries, youth, and a lack of preparation that he and Hue Jackson put into place with some positions.
There are plenty of trade rumors swirling around the league at this time. This player is unhappy and wants out. That player isn’t performing and is on the block. Usually, when it comes to the NFL, it’s more smoke than fire at the trade deadline. But, some reporters are saying that the NFL trade deadline is actually growing to be filled with more action and less false rumors.
Cleveland Browns general manager John Dorsey was praised this offseason for making big moves to get this team to compete and contend for the AFC North title. And while he made some good moves, he also failed to address some key areas of this team.
Namely, the offensive line. After future Hall of Famer left tackle Joe Thomas retired, Dorsey failed to address this spot. Then, Hue Jackson decided it was smart to put someone out to the quarterbacks blind side who didn’t play with any of the other starters during the preseason.

It isn’t just a lack of preparation that left the team with holes. They’ve also had injury problems or off field issues, which left them no other choice than to release linebacker Mychael Kendricks.
There’s one team that has options at both these positions of need for Cleveland: the Arizona Cardinals. While the Browns still have a chance at the AFC North with some moves, Arizona isn’t going anywhere.
Not only is the NFC much tougher to even get a wild card berth, they play in a division with the Rams and Seahawks. Their better option would be to trade some pieces and keep trying to gain draft picks and assets to help them down the road.
The first player Dorsey should ask for is Hasson Reddick. The second year linebacker has seemingly lost his job in Arizona and is seeing the field for less than half of the defensive snaps. Reddick has struggled to grasp the new defense of first year head coach Steve Wilks, and the former first round pick could still fetch a decent draft pick for 2019 because of his youth.
Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams loves to have pass rushers, and Reddick is definitely one of the more versatile players rumored to be on the market. He could fill in at any spot and help what has already been a pretty good defense get even better.
To help out this offensive line, which has allowed the most sacks in the NFL, Dorsey needs to also ask about D.J. Humphries in a package with Reddick. Baker Mayfield has played well for the most part, but having a weak offensive line can stunt the growth potential of a rookie quarterback. If he starts to doubt the protection, he can give up on plays or take his eyes from downfield and the potential for bigger plays goes away.
Humphries would be an immediate upgrade over Desmond Harrison. Although Harrison has played better than some expected during spurts, he’s also had his down moments. That’s to be expected, as he wasn’t necessarily set up for success by his head coach due to his lack of reps with the first team this preseason.
The only downside to Humphries is his expiring contract at the end of the season. But for a team that’s projected to have nearly $80 million in cap space, is it really a problem to bring in someone and have to resign them? Money is better spent than wasted, and Humphries is worth the trade to help Mayfield in his growth.
It may take a lot to get Reddick, but the expiring contract of Humphries and the lack of play time by Hasson could be a perfect pairing for a trade. And hey, while Dorsey is at it, maybe he can trade Hue Jackson to the Cardinals as well. Steve Wilks isn’t going anywhere, but I hear Arizona needs an offensive coordinator. Jackson is the best around and knows how to fix problems. Just ask him!
