Idiotic Clock Management

Then there is the predictably idiotic clock management at the end of the first half. The Steelers intercepted Mayfield with almost 7 minutes left in the half. Hue Jackson stood there refusing to call a timeout. Hue watched as the Steelers used up all the remaining time in the half while scoring a touchdown with 8 seconds left.

What should have Hue done? First, a timeout can be used to help stifle momentum. The Steelers clearly had the momentum but Hue let the Steelers matriculate the ball down the field. Second, call a timeout on any third down play inside 3 minutes. That would have conserved clock should they have gotten the stop.

Third, a timeout before the two-minute warning is a no-brainer. With 2:06 left in the half, Jackson should have called a timeout to force a play before the two-minute warning which could have been used as an extra timeout. Instead, Jackson stood there while the Steelers just milked the clock play after play.

Hue is such a genius. Hue is so smart. It is the rest of us that don’t understand why he is such a great coach. I am sure in the post-game press conference he will blame this all on Todd Haley.
