The Cleveland Browns made the surprising hire of Ryan Lindley as running backs coach, and he will be another person in the organization to help Baker Mayfield.

The Cleveland Browns organization has made it a focus to provide as much as help as possible to Baker Mayfield as he develops in the NFL, and the hiring of Ryan Lindley is just more proof of that.

The Browns hired Lindley as the running backs coach to replace Freddie Kitchens, who is now the offensive coordinator following the firing of Todd Haley.

Kitchens was the quarterbacks coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 2013-2016. Lindley was with the Cardinals for two seasons when Kitchens was the quarterbacks coach, so the two have experience with each other.

With Lindley now on the coaching staff, he is another person that can help Mayfield learn the finer things of being a NFL quarterback.

Lindley was not the most talented quarterback, as he bounced from team-to-team, only starting games when teams were on to their backup or third-string quarterback.

But having another player that has broken down NFL film and knows how to prepare for games will only help Mayfield. Not to mention that Lindley can help Mayfield have more understanding of Kitchens’ offensive concepts.

The Browns made a similar move in the off-season, signing Drew Stanton to a two-year deal. Stanton knew that Tyrod Taylor was on the team and the Browns were planning on drafting a quarterback, meaning that he would be the third-string quarterback and be a mentor. But he still decided to sign with Cleveland.

With the organization planning on adding a young quarterback, they wanted a player that understood the ins-and-outs of being a NFL quarterback, so that is why they made the move to add Stanton.

Now that Mayfield is the starting quarterback, he has a bigger workload during the week to learn the game-plan and to break down the opponents defense. Having two guys like Stanton and Lindley will help Mayfield have better preparation heading into games on Sunday’s.

Although Stanton and Lindley never became more than backup quarterbacks, their knowledge of the position will be invaluable.

It is obvious that the Browns are doing whatever they can to make sure Mayfield becomes the best quarterback that he can be. Adding multiple resources to the roster and the coaching staff is something that the organization has not done with many of their previous young quarterbacks.
