Cleveland Browns: Week 9 instant reactions after loss to Chiefs
With the Kansas City Chiefs coming to town, the Cleveland Browns’ already thin defense had a lot of work ahead of them. When all was said and done, the Browns and Chiefs battled to the finish, in a game that stayed a bit closer than anyone expected.
Two old rivals from the Big XII met each other once again this week. In a classic Wild West shoot out, two Texas-native gunslingers in Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield found themselves locked in an offensive showcase. The last time these two battled, the final score was 66-59. This time around was much tamer, but the offense was still very much on display in a 37-21 final score. The Cleveland Browns lost, but showed some solid plays throughout Let’s get some instant reactions.
Coaching Change is Evident
Right away, one thing anyone who has followed the Browns noticed was just how the coaching shifted. Since the firing of Hue Jackson and the anointing of Gregg Williams as head coach, the aggression level of the Browns has shot straight up.

Williams went for more fourth downs than ever before and completely refused to kick extra points after touchdowns. The Cleveland Browns became an extension of who Gregg Williams is as a person, and whether it works or not, the aggression is here to stay.
Mayfield Shows Major Promise
Baker Mayfield has had an up and down season. As is to be expected from a rookie, the young gun out of Oklahoma has shown that he can be a franchise quarterback, if he can stay consistent with his accuracy and poise. Today, the rookie showed promise against an ailing Kansas City Chiefs defense.
Mayfield had over 200 yards passing and two touchdowns on the day, and was accurate over the entire game, despite a bad decision leading to a late pick. Even after a small injury late in the third quarter, the offense chugged along throughout the game. When Mayfield gets going, he can really make some magic.
And still, it’s no secret that wide receiver is one of Cleveland’s biggest needs. Having a real, game-breaking receiver will be a big help. Just hang in there, Baker Mayfield. Help will be on the way eventually.
Patrick Mahomes is Really, Really Good
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is going to be the MVP of the league this season. The second-year Texas Tech quarterback is in the perfect situation and has all the weapons in the world. Kansas City’s defense leaves a lot to be desired, especially with Eric Berry having been out all year.
Defense might win championships, but video game numbers will win you MVP awards. Patrick Mahomes is going to be the NFL’s most valuable player, unless someone makes a serious push in the second half of the season. The Browns couldn’t stop the Chiefs, and really, that’s to be expected. No one can stop the Chiefs.
