After placing Christian Kirksey and E.J. Gaines on IR, the Cleveland Browns added Jermaine Whitehead and Phillip Gaines via waiver claims

Defensive depth has become a concern for the Cleveland Browns this season and that became a bigger problem when they had to send two key members of the defense to the IR. Linebacker Christian Kirksey and cornerback E.J. Gaines are both done for the season.

To help fill space on their roster, Cleveland made a claim for two defensive backs. One was Phillip Gaines, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, the other was Jermaine Whitehead who was just waived by the Green Bay Packers.

Whitehead’s name sticks out the most as he was the player who found himself ejected from the Packers Sunday night game against the New England Patriots.

Whitehead found himself in a skirmish with center David Andrews, which ended with the defender slapping Andrews across his facemask. He was promptly penalized and then removed from the game.

As for Gaines, he was drafted in the fifth-round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Auburn by the Kansas City Chiefs. At that time, the Browns current general manager, John Dorsey, was working with the Chiefs, so he has some familiarity there.

Cleveland’s defense was a strength of the team to start the season. They were all over the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints in Week 1 and 2, giving them a shot to win in both contests.

However, the injuries have started to pile up and their depth has proven to be an issue. These latest moves aren’t likely to get Cleveland playing like they did to start the season, but they will provide much-needed depth.
