The Cleveland Browns will allow John Dorsey to lead the search for their next head coach, which will be the first time he has ever made such a hire

John Dorsey has had a long and successful career as an NFL executive, but he is about to embark on something completely new this offseason for the Cleveland Browns. Dorsey will be the man in charge of finding the next head coach in Cleveland.

While Dorsey has been a great talent evaluator for years, he’s never made a hire for head coach.

After serving as a scout and director of football operations during his time with the Green Bay Packers (which spanned from 1991 through 2012), Dorsey got his first GM job with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013.

When he arrived there, Andy Reid was already named the coach. Unlike the situation he had in Cleveland where Hue Jackson was already on the job, this one worked out. Dorsey drafted some talented players and Reid did a great job coaching.

Now, Dorsey enters the new territory of hiring a coach. It wasn’t guaranteed this would be the case though. After Jackson was first fired, reports suggested owner Jimmy Haslam would lead the way. That’s since changed, as Dan Labbe and Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com have reported Dorsey will be at the forefront of this hire.

The fact Dorsey has never done this shouldn’t worry fans. He’s been around the game long enough to know a good coach from a bad one, and he also has the vision for this franchise which means he knows the style of coach that can change the culture.

What it does mean for fans is that the future coach will be a complete mystery. We have no past hires to look back on and determine what kind of coach Dorsey prefers.

With that being said, it’s anyone’s guess who Dorsey will target. One thing that is for sure though, it’s a great time to be a Browns fan as the future finally looks bright.
