Cleveland Browns: Baker Mayfield doesn’t hold back on Hue Jackson
By Randy Gurzi
After the Cleveland Browns defeated the Cincinnati Bengals, Baker Mayfield didn’t feel like talking to former head coach Hue Jackson
Anyone who watched ‘Hard Knocks‘ could see that the relationship between former Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson and Baker Mayfield was slightly awkward, to say the least. And that meant we all had eyes on the two when they met this weekend.
Jackson ended up taking a job with the Cincinnati Bengals after the Browns fired him and that gave the Browns a little more fuel to beat their in-state rivals. And Mayfield, who was never given a shot to compete for the starting job during Hue’s reign until injury forced Jackson’s hand, had his best game as a pro in the 35-20 win.
After the game, Jackson made his way to Mayfield to congratulate him. He seemed to go for a hug but was denied as Mayfield simply shook his hand and walked away after a brief conversation.
Later, Mayfield explained how that talk went, and why it was so brief — courtesy of the following tweet from 92.3’s Keith Britton.
Mayfield basically said that he didn’t feel like talking to Jackson and that he was a little bothered that Jackson would ask the guys in their locker room to fight for him, then go to the Bengals and try to beat them twice a year.
The rookie quarterback said it’s a rivalry now and that’s a refreshing thing to hear. Rather than try and praise the opponent, Mayfield seems intent on beating them. That’s the kind of moxie fans knew they would get from the young man.
Of course, it could be more personal. There were reports that Mayfield was less than upset that Jackson was let go. If those reports are true, he had to love putting a loss on him in his new home.
