Ever since taking over for Tyrod Taylor in week three, rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has shown himself to be “The Guy” for the Cleveland Browns. Now, the young gunslinger could be on pace to break a very prestigious record.

Raise your hand if you thought Baker Mayfield was going to be this good. Sure, a lot of fans predicted he could be a pretty good quarterback, but he’s currently drawing comparisons to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees. The rookie out of Oklahoma has been special for the Cleveland Browns this season, and it’s easy to see why.

Mayfield is exactly as the draft process advertised on the tin; scarily accurate, in your face, and unstoppable in rhythm. Ever since Freddie Kitchens took over for Todd Haley at the offensive coordinator position, Mayfield has excelled and is throwing three touchdowns per game.

This is quite literally record-breaking pace.

More from Browns News

As a rookie, the legendary Peyton Manning threw 26 touchdowns for the Indianapolis Colts. He also threw 28 interceptions, but he went on to clean that up and become one of the best players in the history of the NFL.

Right now, Baker Mayfield is on pace to break clean through that record, and have less than a third of the interceptions.

Through eight starts, Mayfield has thrown 17 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Should he continue on his current pace with Freddie Kitchens, he will have 32 touchdowns and just nine interceptions.

This would easily break Manning’s record, in three fewer starts than Manning had. Keep in mind that all but one of those interceptions came with Hue Jackson and Todd Haley coaching Mayfield, and not Gregg Williams and Kitchens.

Baker Mayfield is on pace for a rookie season for the ages, perhaps one of the best of all time. If the glimpses he has shown of his true potential are to be unlocked in due time, then Browns fans are in for a real treat. Buckle your seatbelts, Dawg Pound, and let Mayfield take the wheel. You could be in for a crazy, record-breaking ride for the foreseeable future.
