Cleveland Browns: Why we can, and cannot trust Josh McDaniels
By Randy Gurzi
Reasons not to trust McDaniels
There are two glaring reasons not to trust McDaniels in a coaching search. One is the way things went south so incredibly fast during his tenure with the Denver Broncos. In 2009, McDaniels joined the Broncos after coaching with the Patriots since 2001 and climbing the ranks from personnel assistant to offensive coordinator.
At just 33 years old, he took the reins in Denver and sent off players like quarterback Jay Cutler in a huge roster shakeup. At first, it looked like he was set to be a star following the moves. Denver jumped out to a 6-0 start, but it all went downhill from there. McDaniels finished 8-8 that season and then went 3-9 the next year before being fired.

We all saw in that span that McDaniels isn’t afraid to shake things up, but he also made a lot of unnecessary moves in that process. His penchant for going full speed in pursuit of what he believes is both a curse and a blessing.
All that being said, his Denver tenure is surely a reason for pause.
Even more so, is what happened last year with the Indianapolis Colts. McDaniels not only had himself a job lined up as head coach of the Colts, but he also had hired coordinators who left their jobs to join him. Then, McDaniels bailed.
Not only did that put the Colts in a bad spot, but it also could have adversely affected all the assistants who were set to join him. Luckily for them, Frank Reich kept them on when he was chosen to be the boss in Indy.
These are more than enough reasons for the Browns to proceed cautiously when concerning McDaniels, but there are also reasons to try and trust in the offensive-minded coach.
