The Cleveland Browns are reportedly interest in hiring Mike McCarthy as their next head coach, but are there any benefits to hiring the former Packers head coach?

The Cleveland Browns fired Hue Jackson at the end of October to get a head start on the rest of the NFL in finding their next head coach.

After the success of Sean McVay with the Los Angeles Rams, every NFL organization and their fan base wants to find the next young coach that can revitalize their team.

Browns fans look at the idea of hiring Lincoln Riley or Matt Campbell and think that they could be getting the next McVay. But there is a good possibility that the next McVay is not available in this next wave of head coaches.

The Browns coaching search, led by general manager John Dorsey, may not be looking for the next young head coach. Instead, they could be looking for a veteran NFL coach that the leaders in the front office are familiar with: Mike McCarthy.

The Green Bay Packers fired McCarthy on December 2nd after they have underachieved in 2018 and were virtually knocked out of playoff contention.

According to FanSided’s Matt Verderame, the Browns are already working on hiring McCarthy to be their next head coach.

"Sources have told FanSided that the Browns are already working on exploring whether they will hire McCarthy. McCarthy has obvious ties to the Cleveland front office, most-notably general manager John Dorsey, vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith and assistant general manager Eliot Wolf. – Matt Verderame"

Over the past week, Benjamin Allbright has been dropping hints on Twitter that the Browns are considering hiring McCarthy to be their next head coach.

The idea of the Browns hiring McCarthy as their next head coach concerns a lot of Browns fans. They look at the ineffectiveness of McCarthy’s offense over the years, despite the fact that he had one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the league on his roster.

McCarthy is also known to be an extremely conservative coach which has cost his team wins. He has also struggled in late game situations and managing the clock. Since the Packers won the Super Bowl 2010, there have been a lot of negatives building up during McCarthy’s tenure as Green Bay’s head coach. But are there any potential benefits to hiring McCarthy?

McCarthy has run the traditional version of a west coast offense, and he has failed to alter his offense to the new offensive trend in the NFL of an up-tempo, spread offense. Instead, he relied on Aaron Rodgers to make plays in an offense that is behind the times of the NFL.

But now that he no longer has Rodgers as his quarterback, he can not base his offense on the quarterback making plays on his own. He is going to have to make schematic changes that will help create openings for his quarterback to throw into.

Just look at what happened with Andy Reid after he was fired from the Philadelphia Eagles. Reid is another offensive minded coach that ran the traditional, Bill Walsh version of the west coast offense. In his final years with the Eagles, the offense – and the team – struggled. But now, Reid is leading one of the best offenses in the NFL by implementing more of a spread offense into his west coast offense.

It is possible that after being fired, McCarthy understands that he is going to need to make changes to his offense. Perhaps coming to Cleveland with a quarterback like Baker Mayfield will make McCarthy realize that adjusting to the modern offense will do wonders for his success as an offensive play-caller.

And before Rodgers took over as the Packers starting quarterback, he was being groomed by McCarthy. McCarthy has been known to be a strong developer of young quarterbacks before being hired as the Packers head coach. He helped Aaron Brooks become a solid quarterback with the Saints, and then he helped Rodgers become a star quarterback as soon as he took over for Brett Favre.

McCarthy could be the perfect coach for Mayfield as he continues to learn how to be a NFL quarterback. Although McCarthy’s offense has struggled, the idea of his offense was to help the quarterback get the ball out of his hand quickly. Having Mayfield play in a McCarthy offense could be perfect for his style of being a rhythm passer.

Who knows if working with Rodgers has spoiled McCarthy and he has lost his acumen of being a developer of young quarterbacks. But McCarthy may be better suited to be coaching a younger quarterback instead of a seasoned vet.

He may not be the sexy hire that Browns fans are hoping for, but there is the potential of a fresh start being exactly what McCarthy needed. It remains to be seen if the Browns will hire McCarthy to be the next head coach, but he may not be as bad of a hire as many have made him out to be.
