Cleveland Browns: 2019 7-Round mock draft with a quarter season to go
By Randy Gurzi
Round 5, Pick 3 (via New England): Jalen Hurd, WR, Baylor
Back at it with another pick in the fifth, the Cleveland Browns have this selection thanks to the unpopular move in which they sent Josh Gordon to the Patriots. There’s simply no way they’ll match the talent they shipped off, but Dorsey can still find someone who can help.
They land Baylor wide receiver Jalen Hurd with this pick as they pick up a versatile weapon. Hurd was a running back for Tennessee before transferring to Baylor where he switched to wideout. He had 69 receptions for 946 yards in 12 games for Baylor but was even more impressive as a runner for the Vols.
Hurd had his best season in 2015 when he ran for 1,285 yards and 12 touchdowns. He brings excellent size at 6-foot-4 and 217-pounds, but it’s his ability to help in a multitude of ways that attracts Cleveland.
Round 6: Tommy Sweeney, TE, Boston College
Another pass target for Baker Mayfield is picked up with their sixth-round pick. Tommy Sweeney isn’t one of the big names at tight end, but the Browns are looking for depth there rather than someone who can take over. David Njoku is the starter, Sweeney will be fighting for a spot as a third tight end.
Round 7 (via Pittsburgh): Derrick Baity, CB, Kentucky
Cleveland doesn’t have a seventh-round pick of their own, but hey do have one from Pittsburgh here. With that choice, they add another defensive back to their depth chart in Derrick Baity out of Kentucky. With Denzel Ward, Terrance Mitchell, and T.J. Carrie all on board, this position is pretty strong.
As we have seen though, injuries can test that depth in a hurry. Baity adds another big body as the 6-foot-3 corner can match up with some of the bigger receivers in the league. He’s also shown good instincts with six-career interceptions for the Wildcats.
