If Urban Meyer was not dealing with health concerns, Mary Kay Cabot believes that the Ohio State University coach would have been a Cleveland Browns head coaching candidate.

The Cleveland Browns are still putting together their list of candidates for their head coaching vacancy after firing Hue Jackson in October. No one is sure who is on the list, but one coach that will not be a candidate is the soon-to-be former Ohio State University head football coach, Urban Meyer.

On the same day that Meyer and the Ohio State University announced that he will be retiring from coaching, Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot joined 92.3 The Fan show Baskin and Phelps.

Cabot was asked about Meyer, and she we could go on to say that he could have been a candidate for the Browns head coaching job if he were not dealing with health concerns.

“I will say, the first thing that came to my mind was the fact, I 100 percent think that he would have been on the Browns radar had he not been dealing with this brain cyst,” Cabot told the radio show.

Meyer made it known in late October that he has recently been dealing with complications from a brain cyst. He said the cyst was diagnosed in 1998 and the symptoms continued to worsen following the diagnosis.

He revealed that he had brain surgery in 2014 to drain fluid from the cyst. Following the surgery, he continued to have symptoms, including headaches that would affect him on the sidelines during games.

The brain cyst has forced Meyer to retire from coaching at the age of 54. He will coach one more game for the Ohio State Buckeyes, but will then be giving Ohio State offensive coordinator Ryan the head coaching duties.

With how severe the complications are, it would make no sense for the Browns to even consider for the head coaching job, even though he fits exactly what the organization would want from a head coach.

Meyer has been known to be a great leader, which played a huge role in his success as a college football coach. He is also been the leader of some great offenses during his time as a head coach, and he would have been a good fit with Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The one thing that Meyer prides himself on as a coach is having a strong special teams unit. The Browns have struggled on special teams this year, and having a coach with a forte in special teams would have been a great addition for the team.

Even if he would have been healthy enough to continue coaching, no one knows if he would have left Ohio State for a NFL job. He has a great legacy in college football and may not have wanted to risk that legacy by potentially losing in the professional ranks.

The Browns will continue their head coaching search, and Meyer will not be someone that the organization will consider. But it is interesting to consider the possibilities had Meyer not been dealing with his health problems.
