Other names and other questions

Bruce Arians has volunteered for the job, repeatedly. But there are questions there as well. The largest is why does he want the job? Is this a chance for one last payday? Or does he truly have a fire in the belly to get this team to the Super Bowl? What staff would he retain? How many years does he have left? These are legitimate questions.

There are other names as well. Matt Campbell, an Ohio native who is currently coaching at Iowa State. Dave Toub and Eric Bieniemy, both currently on the staff of the Kansas City Chiefs.

There’s also New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel who also has Northeast Ohio ties, but also has shown an unwillingness to accept the Browns job in the past. Other names will surely surface before a hire is made.

And then there’s the current staff. Could the Browns consider removing the interim label from Gregg Williams and making him the new head coach while retaining Freddy Kitchens as offensive coordinator?

Four games into their “interview” the Williams-Kitchens combo is 2-2 and the Browns pass the eye test on many levels. Most importantly, Mayfield’s play is ascending with Kitchens as offensive coordinator. That’s a hard fact to ignore.
