Game: Carolina Panthers (6-6) vs Cleveland Browns (4-7-1)

The Cleveland Browns return to First Energy Stadium after splitting two road games to host the Carolina Panthers in this Week 14 matchup. The Panthers come in on a four-game skid after starting 6-2 and now find themselves on the outside of the playoff picture. The Browns, regardless of playoff scenarios, have to view this as a must-win game.

Every game is an opportunity to measure your progress, and this game will be no different. We have seen what Baker Mayfield is capable of against bad defenses, and we also saw him struggle against an elite defense in the first half of last week’s game. This week, we get to see what he can do versus a mediocre defense.
The Panthers strength on defense is their linebackers, anchored by All-Pro Luke Kuechly. They have proven to be stout against the run. It’s going to be a lunch pail game for Nick Chubb. However, their defensive backs have played poorly this season, and Mayfield should be able to exploit that weakness. Expect a heavy dose of Antonio Callaway in the vertical passing game.

On defense, the Browns will have to make a banged-up Cam Newton beat them from within the pocket. Maintaining their pass rush lane integrity will be a priority. While Newton’s shoulder may be injured, his legs are not, and he will not hesitate to beat you with them.

The X-factor will be the Browns ability to corral Christian McCaffrey. The 2nd year swiss army knife of a running back is on pace to be the 3rd player in NFL history with over 1,000 yards rushing and over 1,000 yards receiving in a single season. Limiting McCaffrey will be a very tough task.

Next. A hard coaching search with no easy answers. dark

In the end, the Browns defense will force Newton into making some bad decisions and give Mayfield extra opportunities with the ball. He will make take advantage of them. The red zone efficiency will continue and the Browns will score touchdowns instead of field goals.
