Stud: T.J. Carrie

T.J Carrie’s play has dropped off ever since the Browns had to move him to the outside due to injuries. He has had problems with keeping guys in front of him, causing him to draw penalties. That was different on Saturday, as he was able to play tight coverage without drawing any penalties.

Carrie made three total tackles, one pass defended, and an interception. The Broncos passing offense was unable to push the ball downfield because of the tight coverage the Browns had on the outside receivers.

Although Carrie’s interception was setup by a Keenum overthrow, Carrie disguised his coverage so well that Keenum did not think he was going to be playing where he was. Carrie was supposed to be covering the flat, but dropped his coverage down the sideline to make the interception. Carrie made a leaping grab behind the Broncos wide receiver and was able to maintain control as he landed.

The Broncos passing offense has not been explosive this season, as they were able to pick the Browns defense apart with underneath throws. But Carrie’s ability to play tight coverage made it almost impossible for the Broncos to even make a few plays downfield.

As Denzel Ward gets healthy and potentially returns by next week, Carrie can be moved back into his natural position in the slot. Playing on the inside could help him put together performances like Saturday night more often.
