FS1 host Colin Cowherd asks is Nick Saban could be the head coach of the Cleveland Browns. He looks at the fit between him as Baker Mayfield as the key.

Many names have been thrown out there as we all wonder who will be the next Cleveland Browns head coach.

The usual suspects have been Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, former Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, and recently released Mike McCarthy. Outside of those names, interim coach Gregg Williams and even Freddie Kitchens have been mentioned as candidates.

And now FS1’s Colin Cowherd adds another name as he said on his show, ‘The Herd,’ Wednesday that a name being rumored is Nick Saban from Alabama. He teased it before the show before diving in with reasons it would work.

Of course the main question asked was: “would Baker Mayfield and Nick Saban be the perfect player-coach combination?” This has to be asked of any candidate as Mayfield will be the key to any coach making it work in Cleveland — which explains the calls for Williams and Kitchens to stay in town.

As for the fit with Saban and Mayfield, that could potentially work. Saban may not have panned out as the Miami Dolphins coach, but that was due more to him not having a quarterback than anything else.

Had he gotten husband man, it could have worked. And the guy he was after was Drew Brees, who has many of the similar traits that Mayfield does.

The problem is, this is arguably the wrong question to ask. Saban to Cleveland is more about the way he would work with the Haslam’s and John Dorsey.

Currently at Alabama, Saban has all the say. He picks the players, the schemes, the tone of the program — everything. In Cleveland, he would have to find a way to work with Dorsey to pick the players and also find a way to make sure the Haslam’s are good with whatever is going on since they like to have their hands in everything as well.

With all that being said, Saban could make it in the NFL — and he could succeed with the Browns. The problem is there’s no reason to think he would want to.

Saban has it made at Bama. He’s not leaving the dynasty he built to have less control at Cleveland — or anywhere in the NFL.
