Cleveland Browns: Top 5 rushing performances since 1999
4. Jamal Lewis, September 16th, 2007
Jamal Lewis was a stud running back for the Baltimore Ravens during their early days. A Super Bowl champion with Baltimore, Lewis rushed for 295 yards against the Browns which stood as a single-game rushing record for years, until it was broken by Adrian Peterson’s 296. Just a few years later, Lewis would suit up for the Browns, from 2007-2009.
Early into his tenure in the Dawg Pound, Lewis made his presence known in perhaps the most famous post-1999 Browns shootout of all time. The Browns and the Bengals battled to a 51-45 finish, with a victory for Cleveland. The Browns needed every bit of Derek Anderson’s 328 passing yards, and Lewis’s 216 rushing yards.
The week two matchup propelled the Browns throughout the season, as Anderson continued his strong performances until the end of the year. Lewis was important to the team, yes, but this was his best game by far. Had he played like this the entire season, there’s no telling where the Browns could have gone in 2007.
Although Cleveland didn’t reach the playoffs with their best record since 1999, Lewis’s performance in week two will never be forgotten. With he and Anderson combined, the Browns put together perhaps their most impressive offensive game since their return to the league.
