Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield is having an impressive rookie season and is having a similar statistical season as Tom Brady.

The Cleveland Browns have found their franchise quarterback in Baker Mayfield. In just his rookie season, he has transformed the Browns offense and has become the obvious leader of the team and the organization.

Since Freddie Kitchens became the interim offensive coordinator prior to the Browns’ Week 9 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Mayfield’s play has improved. With Kitchens tailoring the offense to Mayfield’s strengths, the passing offense has become more efficient while still creating big plays.

Mayfield’s play has made him a strong candidate for the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Although he is still making some rookie mistakes, his play has shown the potential of him becoming one of the next best quarterbacks in the league.

One of the most interesting parts about Mayfield’s season is how statistically similar it is to the season of New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady. Mayfield has played in two fewer games than Brady, but their averages are nearly identical.

In 13 games, Mayfield has completed 64.6 percent of his passes for 3,394 yards, 24 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 95.1. In 15 games, Brady has completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 4,105 yards, 25 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 95.4.

On a per game basis, Mayfield is averaging 257.6 yards,7.5 yards per attempt, 1.8 touchdowns, and 0.8 interceptions. Brady is averaging 273.6 yards, 7.6 yards per attempt, 1.7 touchdowns, and 0.7 interceptions.

Brady is not putting up the MVP numbers that the NFL is used to seeing him have, but he is still having a strong season. For Mayfield to have nearly identical numbers in just his first season and having a coordinator switch midway through the season is quite surprising.

Although this does not mean Mayfield is already as good Brady, it shows that Mayfield is already showing the ability of doing what the other best quarterbacks in the league can do.

There is a good chance that Mayfield’s stats this season would have been even better had Kitchens been calling plays for the entire season. When Mayfield was playing in Todd Haley’s offense at the beginning of the season, too often was he being forced into throws because of long developing routes and poor pass protection.

Perhaps this is a sign of things to come with Mayfield. As he gains more experience and has an entire off-season to master Kitchens’ offense or whoever the organization hires to call plays, Mayfield’s performance should continue to improve.

It may not mean much for Mayfield to have nearly identical stats as Brady, but it is an interesting note to the rookie quarterback’s season. Browns fans can only hope that Mayfield’s stats will continue to resemble Brady’s stats as he progresses through the rest of his career.
