Cleveland Browns: Baker Mayfield wins sixth Rookie of the Week award
With just one week left in the regular season, Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield is bolstering his resume for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He’s won his sixth NFL Rookie of the Week award in Week 16.
The Cleveland Browns have not had a rookie class like this in a long, long time. To say that general manager John Dorsey nailed this draft class would be an understatement.
Not only did he provide Cleveland with pieces on both sides of the ball, but he gave Browns fans the franchise quarterback they had yearned for, longed for, for nearly two decades.
Now, we’re seeing that franchise quarterback grow up, and become a force in the NFL. After his 284 yard, three-touchdown performance at home in a win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Browns rookie signal-caller Baker Mayfield has won NFL Rookie of the Week for a sixth time this year.
Mayfield has made his presence known around the league this season, and just his name on the roster is sure to make the Browns a very appetizing coaching destination. That is, if they even decide to relieve interim head coach Gregg Williams in the first place.
Mayfield, it seems, has all but solidified a spot for Williams, and offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, on Cleveland’s 2019 staff. It has been reported that Kitchens has locked up the offensive coordinator job next season due to his work with Mayfield.
This is the tenth time that a Browns rookie has won the award. Mayfield has won the award six times. Running back Nick Chubb has won the award twice, while cornerback Denzel Ward has also won the award two times.
Mayfield, along with Dorsey, has turned around the fortunes of the once hapless Cleveland Browns. The Browns, finally, have their franchise guy at the quarterback position. Congratulations on Rookie of the Week No. 6, Six. Here’s to much more hardware in the future.
