NFL head coach candidate: Cleveland Browns are ‘best job out there’
By Dan Justik
It is still a mystery of what the second round of the Cleveland Browns head coach search will look like, but one candidate believes it is the best job available.
It appears that the Cleveland Browns have finished their first round of interviews for their head coach position after interviewing seven candidates.
It is unknown if the Browns are planning any other first interviews, but it looks like there are only seven candidates for the job. After those initial interviews, it is unknown who is the favorite for the job.
However, those candidates could be targeting the Browns as their No. 1 job. According to NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala, one candidate for multiple head coach vacancies told her the Browns have the best job available.

Heading into the week of initial interviews, it was a debate that the either the Browns, Green Bay Packers, and New York Jets had the most attractive job opening. After the Packers reported hiring of Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur, it seems that there is little doubt that the Browns job is currently the best available.
As of January 8th, there are seven jobs available, including Cleveland. The Browns, Jets, Miami Dolphins, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Cincinnati Bengals are still looking for their next head coach.
Unlike most of the other available jobs, the Browns have their franchise quarterback and most of their roster and depth chart filled with young talent. Cleveland also has plenty of assets to add to that talent with the fourth-most cap space available this off-season, along with extra draft picks in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield showed incredible promise during his rookie season. He helped lead the Browns to a 5-3 finish to the season, which kept the Browns in playoff contention until Week 16. With the talent he has shown, any head coach candidate would likely want to hitch his wagon to the young signal caller, as Mayfield has emerged as the next best young quarterback.
Cleveland also has a young defense that has potential top-tier players at their positions. With Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Larry Ogunjobi, Jabrill Peppers, and Joe Schobert, the defense has enough talent to become a top defense in the league. With a couple more pieces across the defense, the unit should improve in 2019.
Coaches want to find a young team that already has talent so they can compete right away and add job security. Most of the currently available jobs are rebuilding teams that have some solid pieces, but still needs a lot of work. With the Browns, they seem prepared to take over the AFC North and compete for the playoffs. And they are set to do so for many years to come.
It is not a surprise to hear that one head coach candidate considers the Browns job the best available. That is why the Browns can take their time with this search, as they will most likely get any candidate that they want. Although there is the persona that Cleveland is still the ‘same old Browns’, people around the league appear to want to become a part of something special with the Browns.
