Can you guess the quarterback who happens to be the Cleveland Browns all-time leader in pass completion percentage, while ranking high in many other categories as well?

When you say the word ‘quarterback’ to a Cleveland Browns fan, several names could come to mind.

Baker Mayfield if they’re a newer fan.

Bernie Kosar if they’ve been around for awhile, Brian Sipe if they’re even older.

And if they truly bleed the orange and brown, they’ll think Otto Graham, the legendary Brown-daddy of them all.

But what if someone said, name the Browns quarterback who’s the franchise’s all-time leader in pass completion percentage?

If you guessed any of the previously mentioned quarterbacks, you’re wrong.

Here’s a hint:

This same player ranks fifth among Browns passing leaders, having attempted 1,714 passes for 11,131 total yards in his five-season Cleveland career.

Need another?

He’s the only twenty-first century Browns quarterback to bring the Browns to the postseason.

More?

In 1999, he threw a Hail Mary pass to wide receiver Kevin Johnson in the final seconds of the Week 8 New Orleans Saints matchup at the Superdome to win the game 21-16, the Browns first inaugural season victory since their tragic post-Modell-ian re-birth.

He went to the University of Kentucky and in 1998 threw for 4,275 yards, which set an SEC single-season passing yards record that still stands today.

Final hint:

His last name is arguably the most valued piece of household furniture east of the Lay-Z-Boy.

For those Browns fans too new to know his name (or too lazy or slow with the Google), Tim Couch is the man, and he’s an important part of Cleveland Browns history.

First under head coach Chris Palmer, and then Butch Davis, Couch’s expansion Browns went from a 2-14 record in 1999 to a 9-7 finish in 2002, culminating in the only playoff appearance the post-99 Browns have ever made.

Let that sink in: Tim Couch is the only twenty-first century Browns quarterback to bring the Browns to the postseason.

It was a Wild Card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers (pause for booing) that the Browns lost in the final minute when Steelers quarterback Tommy Maddox handed the ball to running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala for a three-yard touchdown.

[Re-live that exciting game in all its glorror (glory and horror) by reading this Game Recap: Cleveland Browns latest playoff appearance.]

In a Browns world filled to the brim with what Mayfield is gonna do, let’s take a moment to remember and pay tribute to exactly what Couch already did for the Cleveland Browns.

In all-time Browns records, Couch ranks:

  • 3rd in completions (1,025)
  • 4th in passing attempts (1,741)
  • 5th in passing yards (11,131)
  • 6th in quarterback rating (75.1)
  • 7th in touchdown passes (64)

And did I mention he’s the only twenty-first century Browns quarterback to bring the Browns to the postseason?

So for those wondering who that 41-year-old soft-spoken, clean-cut young man was calling the Browns 2018 pre-season games, that was Tim “Wild Card” Couch, and the Browns have been lucky to have him.

Thankfully now there’s a new twenty-first century Browns quarterback in town, and this one’s not soft-spoken or low key at all.

The plan, of course, is for Baker Mayfield to do all the things Tim Couch has already done plus a whole lot more.

Baker’s other job is to extract the ‘horror’ from the glorrible Cleveland Browns and bring back the glory of postseason play to Cleveland.

He does that, Baker’s name will be on Browns fans’ minds forever.
