Round 1 Pick 17: Jeffery Simmons, DT, Mississippi State

It is no secret that the Browns need some help across their defensive line due to the lack of depth in that room. Emmanuel Ogbah has not played a healthy season in the last two years, and when he is on the field has not produced to the level that one would expect a former second-round pick to perform at while, as mentioned earlier, Garrett and Ogunjobi were well overworked which led to a drop in production as the season progressed.

Jeffery Simmons would provide the Browns some much-needed depth and talent to their young and explosive defensive line. Entering the draft after his junior season at Mississippi State, Simmons finished his career with seven sacks and 33 tackles for loss, displaying a tendency to play in the opponent’s backfield.

Due to some off-the-field issues in high school, Simmons was not invited to the combine but has not had any issues during his college career. With that being said, Simmons will have to put in work at his pro day, going through on the field exercises while also performing all of the tests such as the 40-yard dash and bench press.

General manager John Dorsey has not shied away from players with an off-the-field past has he has drafted the likes of Kareem Hunt, Tyreek Hill, and Antonio Callaway in the past, so there is no reason to assume that he would start shying away now. The talent is clearly there with Simmons, so if he is on the board, expect him to be a Brown.
