The Cleveland Browns have a potential hole at offensive tackle, making a trade for a Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Donald Penn a possibility.

The Cleveland Browns are in an interesting position during the 2019 off-season. They want to build a team with young talent, but are in a position where they can add older, veteran talent to supplement their young players.

As the Browns look to compete for the playoffs in 2019, they are going to have to plug a couple of holes on the roster with some veteran players.

One of those positions could be offensive tackle. The Browns may have found one of their tackles for the future in Greg Robinson, who was impressive after starting at left tackle for the second half of the season.

Although Robinson is set to be a free agent, the Browns are expected to re-sign the 26-year-old in the off-season. Even if they do not see him as the long-term answer at left tackle, they could move him to right tackle if they find a better option at left tackle this off-season.

Although he improved during the second half of the 2018 season, right tackle Chris Hubbard did not have the season the team expected from him after his signing last off-season. He was regularly beat in pass protection and the pressure he was allowing was concerning.

If the Browns want to replace Hubbard, they will have options this off-season. One idea to improve the Browns offensive tackle position was raised by Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report on Feb. 8. Gagnon listed the ideal trade scenario for every team. For the Browns, he believes trading for Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Donald Penn is the ideal trade.

"The three-time Pro Bowler will turn 36 this offseason, but his position has a long shelf life, and the young Browns could benefit from his wisdom and experience in the locker room. Regardless, he’d be a relatively inexpensive upgrade on Baker Mayfield’s blind side, and he’d cost only $7.6 million in the final year of his contract. – Brad Gagnon"

Penn has consistently been one of the best tackles in the NFL. But with his time in the NFL closing, the Raiders decided to draft their left tackle of the future in Kolton Miller during the 2018 NFL Draft. With the addition of Miller, Penn was moved to right tackle. However, his season ended after suffering a groin injury during Week 4 of the season.

Since Jon Gruden became the head coach of the Raiders, he has been purging the roster. Since Penn is at the end of his career and was not a Gruden addition, Gruden may feel inclined to get a draft pick for Penn instead of keeping him on the roster.

Cleveland has the draft ammunition to make a move for Penn, if they feel that it is a reasonable asking price. The Browns have extra selections in the third-round, fifth-round, and the seventh-round of the 2019 NFL Draft. .

Considering the Browns can make some moves with those extra selections, it would be smart to try to trade for Penn. Not only would he solidify one of the tackle spots for a season, but it lets the Browns address other needs this off-season and either develop a tackle behind Penn or wait until next off-season to find another tackle.

With the Browns wanting to protect the future of Baker Mayfield, giving him two solid tackles is important. If the Browns can make a move for Penn, then Cleveland would not have to worry about much pressure coming from his side of the line. Should the Cleveland Browns attempt to make a move for Penn, it would be smart decision.
