Greatest moments in Cleveland Browns history: 13. Jerome Harrison’s big day
Chosen in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Washington State, running back Jerome Harrison spent the first three seasons of his NFL career quietly serving as a backup for the Cleveland Browns. He progressively got more touches as his experience grew, and by year three he had earned 34 carries for 246 yards and a touchdown.
Harrison ended up tipping all those marks in 2009 when he had the breakout game of all breakout games. In a late-December game on the road, Harrison ran all over the Kansas City Chiefs. He set a team-record of 286 yards, which beat the great Jim Brown’s previous mark. Harrison also added three touchdowns in the game — which tripled his career total.
This performance still stands as the third-highest yardage total in NFL history, behind only Adrian Peterson (296 yards) and Jamal Lewis (295 yards). Harrison continued to roll down the stretch as he finished with 862 yards on the season — 561 of which came in the last three games. Harrison never had the same success after that, and later was found to have a brain tumor that shortened his career. Still just 35 years old, Harrison appears to be doing well and is still a popular name for Browns fans due to this game.
