With Joe Flacco headed to the Denver Broncos, the Cleveland Browns may want to see if Case Keenum is interested in a backup job — as long as it’s not at his current salary

There was once a time when every single quarterback that came available was considered as an option for the Cleveland Browns. Thankfully now that Baker Mayfield has the job locked down, that’s no longer the case.

For instance, when the Ravens moved on from Joe Flacco to Lamar Jackson, no one wanted the former Super Bowl winner to wear the orange and brown. And now that Flacco has been traded to the Denver Broncos, leaving Case Keenum on the outs, there will be no cries for him to be the man in The Land.

However, the idea of Keenum in a Browns uniform isn’t too crazy. Of course, this wouldn’t be in a starting role, but maybe him returning to a backup job in 2018 would help him restore his name — and the Browns could very well be in the market for a backup with Tyrod Taylor set to hit free agency.

Keenum isn’t a bad quarterback at all, even though the Broncos struggled with him. In his career, he has a 26-28 record in 54 starts and has completed 62 percent of his passes for 12,661 yards. Keenum also has a respectable 64-to-42 touchdown-to-interception ratio and did take the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Championship Game in 2017.

Looking at all those numbers, the Browns could do much worse in finding someone to back up Mayfield. ANd speaking of Mayfield, the two are similar in stature and both played in Air Raid offenses at school and spent time with Kilff Kingsbury meaning the offense wouldn’t have to change much if something ever did happen to their star.

The only hang up right now would be the money. Keenum signed a contract worth roughly $18 million per season. That means if the Browns are interested at all, they need to wait for him to be released rather than try and work out a deal with Keenum.
