A former rival of the Cleveland Browns, Marvin Lewis, dishes on what made Baker Mayfield tough to defend and what Freddie Kitchens will face in 2019

For 16 years, Marvin Lewis was a major rival of the Cleveland Browns as he was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals. After a 131-122-3 career record, Lewis and the team parted ways.

His final season ended with just six wins and 10 losses, with two of those coming at the hands of the Browns. Now out of the league, Lewis took some time to talk about the 2019 season with the guys on ESPN’s NFL Live.

And one topic he spoke on was the coming season for the Browns — with Baker Mayfield and Freddie Kitchens being the main points he covered.

When asked about what made Mayfield such a challenge to defend, Lewis pointed to the young quarterback’s accuracy. He says that Baker puts the ball where only his guys can catch it and also gave credit to the wideouts for making the plays.

He later alluded to Kitchens and what awaits him as he makes the transition from offensive coordinator to head coach. Lewis explains that it’s much more difficult to have an entire roster under your command rather than just the offense.

That statement is absolutely true, and Kitchens is smart enough to understand this. That’s why he brought on assistants like Steve Wilks and Todd Monken who have held head coaching titles in the NFL and NCAA respectively.

This season should be fun for Browns fans as things are finally turning around for the better. As long as Kitchens can handle the increased workload there’s no reason to think the upward trend won’t continue.
