The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, like a look at some defensive options in 2019 NFL Free Agency

It’s a rather slow time around the NFL, and even with the signing of Kareem Hunt by the Cleveland Browns, things have been quiet in Berea for the most part. That’s about to change as free agency and the draft are right around the corner.

For the Browns, their roster looks much stronger now than it did to start the 2018 NFL Season, but that doesn’t mean they can’t make some improvements. And the most likely spot they will focus on this coming season is the defensive line.

With that being the case, one of our stories today focuses on the available free agents. Jake Burns of Cleveland.com talks about tier 1 prospects like DeMarcus Lawrence, and Jadeveon Clowney as well as second-tier players like Brandon Graham and Dee Ford.

Cleveland Browns News

Cleveland Browns 2019 free-agent options at defensive end, a breakdown: Film Room — Jake Burns, Cleveland.com

"“The connection between Ford and Browns general manager John Dorsey is obvious. Dorsey selected Ford in the first round in 2014 while with the Chiefs. Ford had his best career grade at 88.6 and displayed the speed skills that set him apart. Talk about a breakout season at the right time. Ford finally put it together in 2018.”"

Dee Ford is listed as a tier 2 free agent defensive end by Burns but could be a realistic option for the Browns. Not only does he have the ties to Dorsey, but the Chiefs may not tag him.

NFL Free Agency 2019: Predicting Where the Top WRs Will Land — Kristopher Knox, Bleacher Report

"“Former Buccaneers offensive coordinator Todd Monken now holds the same position with the Browns, though head coach Freddie Kitchens plans to call plays. Kitchens wasn’t afraid to play Jarvis Landry outside the slot, so there is room for both him and Humphries in the offense.”"

Just like Dee Ford being tied to the general manager, there are connections here with Todd Monken and Adam Humphries, which is why Knox says the two could be a pair. It makes a lot of sense and while he’s not a legit No. 1 receiver, he would be a great addition to their committee.

Jeffery Simmons now out of the question

Martin McConnell talks about how the Browns won’t be taking Jeffery Simmons with their first-round pick after a torn ACL. With defensive tackle being a big need, there were plenty of mock drafts linking him and the franchise before his injury in practice.

Baker Mayfield: Fans should expect Browns ‘to be competing in playoffs every year’ — Matthew Florjancic, WKYC.com

"“The Cleveland Browns did not have a winning record during the 2018 season and failed to qualify for the postseason for a league-worst 16th straight year, but there is plenty of optimism surrounding the team just 14 months removed from their winless year in 2017.Although the Browns were 7-8-1, they are considered a team on the rise that could not only finish with a winning record, but also, get to the postseason and make some noise.”"

The Cleveland Browns were a team on the rise in 2018 and there are plenty who think there’s plenty of good stuff around the corner. Add Baker Mayfield to that mix as the young quarterback thinks they should be a perennial postseason team.
