Green Bay Packers – Linebacker Clay Matthews

Much like a potential move for Shead, the Cleveland Browns potentially signing Clay Matthews would be about building depth on the defense. Although Matthews’ name has star power, his production no longer matches that star power.

More from Dawg Pound Daily

The Browns linebackers struggled for most of 2018 both against the run and the pass. Joe Schobert was once again strong at middle linebacker, but even he struggled at times. For Cleveland, building depth at the second level would make sense.

Matthews has experience playing inside linebacker and also on the edge. He is better suited to play on the edge and rush the quarterback, but can play in the middle if necessary. However, at this point of his career, he likely should not be a starter.

Last season was Matthews’ worst season production wise. He started all 16 games, but made only 43 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and 12 quarterback hits.

At 32-years-old, Matthews’ tank is starting to empty. But for Cleveland, adding him as a situational pass rusher or a backup linebacker to take the load off the starters could make sense. Perhaps playing in a smaller role can help Matthews perform at a higher level since he would not be forced to play too many snaps.

Signing Matthews would also create a lot of nostalgia for Browns fans, as Matthews’ father is a Cleveland Browns legend. For a one-year depth signing, the Browns should explore the idea of bringing a Matthews back to Cleveland.
