There’s a good chance the Cleveland Browns will draft a safety at No. 49 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. If they do, here are three possible targets at that slot.

Many of the starting spots on the Cleveland Browns roster for the 2019 season are accounted for. Being early April, this is an amazing statement that also shows just how far they have come since general manager John Dorsey came over after his time with the Kansas City Chiefs came to an end.

When Dorsey arrived in December of 2017, the Browns were finishing up one of the worst stretches of football in NFL history. Led by front office executive Sashi Brown and head coach Hue Jackson, Cleveland went 1-15 in 2016 and followed that up with a 0-16 campaign — just the second in NFL history.

For some reason, ownership wanted to stay the course with Jackson but they did give Dorsey free rein on roster decisions. That led to the drafting of Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward, and Georgia running back Nick Chubb. Dorsey also pulled off trades for wide receiver Jarvis Landry and free safety Damarious Randall.

Eventually, they let go of Jackson and the team started to win games. A 5-3 stretch to finish 2018 gave all fans hope, but that hope has multiplied due to Dorsey’s work this offseason. The Cleveland GM filled their hole at defensive tackle by landing Sheldon Richardson in free agency and he also picked up linebacker Adarius Taylor.

In addition to those moves, he pulled off a little trade with the New York Giants that netted them Odell Beckham, Jr. OBJ rejoins his best friend, Landry, as well as his New York teammate Olivier Vernon.

However, that Beckham trade may have created the lone battle for a starting spot as strong safety Jabrill Peppers was sent to the Big Apple in that deal. They recently added Eric Murray, but the former Chiefs safety could have competition from either a free agent to be named — Tre Boston is one rumored name — or a rookie.

Should they go the rookie route, here are three names that Dorset could target if he did decide to use their first pick, which is No. 49 overall.
