Round 2, Pick 49: Justin Layne, CB, Michigan State

Cleveland doesn’t have a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft due to their trade for Odell Beckham, Jr. That means we all have to wait until pick No. 49 to see who lands in The Land, but the good news is we know that they’re getting a legitimate star in exchange for their first pick — although it did also cost their second pick in the third and Jabrill Peppers.

Now on the clock in the second, Cleveland addresses one of the few starting spots that is expected to be up for grabs as they take Justin Layne. A Cleveland native, Layne played at Michigan State but thinks about coming home quite often.

"“I think about it all the time, My dad (is) a diehard Browns fan. He got the bathroom painted, the house, the basement painted Browns, everything. I’ve always kind of been a Browns fan growing up. “We always used to watch the Browns game every Sunday. If I mentioned anything about the Steelers, he’d say ‘uh, yeah, we’re not having that.’ Like, everything. He’s a diehard.” Layne said, via Nick Shook of ClevelandBrowns.com."

Layne has a shot to be the starter from day one but would have to beat out Terrance Mitchell and T.J. Carrie. He has several things on his side, including the kind of length that new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks craves in his outside corners.
