Cleveland Browns: 3 second-round targets who can start day one
By Randy Gurzi
The Cleveland Browns don’t have a pick in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft but they can still find a starter with their first pick — No. 49 in the second round
Without a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns need to make sure that they land a good player with their second-round selection, which comes at No. 49 overall. General manager John Dorsey did a great job overall with his first draft in Cleveland, but his moves in Round 2 had mixed results.
Nick Chubb was taken at No. 35 overall and he ended up with 996 yards rushing as a rookie. The former Georgia Bulldog proved to be well worth the investment and is more than capable of carrying the load. However, he wasn’t the first pick Dorsey made in that round.
Instead, the first selection was Nevada offensive lineman Austin Corbett, who hardly saw the field as a rookie. To be fair, that was likely the plan all along. Corbett was taken 33rd overall but played tackle at Nevada. In fact, he followed in the footsteps of Joel Bitonio who was the left tackle before Corbett took over.
Like Bitonio, Corbett had to kick inside to play in the NFL, which is easier said than done. Now that he has a full year under his belt, the Browns seem content with him playing at right guard. This was evidenced by them trading away Kevin Zeitler in the offseason. Once we see Corbett play this year, then we can try and judge how solid a pick he really was.
This season, the Browns could go either way. They could look for someone capable of starting right away the same as Chubb. Then again, with the roster they have built, they could also go after someone like Corbett who needs time to adapt to the next level.
Should they go for someone that can make an instant impact, here are three names to consider as we look at players who could be available at pick No. 49 that would be able to start right away.
