Cleveland Browns Draft Profile: LB Drue Tranquill
Looking at potential Cleveland Browns draft targets leads us to Drue Tranquill, a leader at Notre Dame who is strong inside, and very good in zone coverage in the middle of the field.
Our series on potential Cleveland Browns draft targets continues and brings us to Notre Dame linebacker Drue Tranquill.
Watching his tape this man can play some serious football and is currently my LB5. As an older rookie, he has that maturity and with being a captain at a school like Notre Dame it only adds to his locker room leader mentality.
I feel adding him to the Browns, early day three is not only a good move and can add quality depth but someone to counteract some of this talk that the Browns are “adding trouble makers” into the locker room.
Drue Tranquill is not going to wow scouts or GM’s but he will work for his teammates and that will translate to on the field play and that will bring a locker room closer together and that in turn does improve his team.
Tranquill is not some incredible athlete like a Myles Garret but he makes up for it with effort and Football IQ.
Here are some Key points for the young linebacker:
• Captain for Notre Dame
• High Football IQ
• If he’s not making the tackle, he’s the next man there
• Plays well in coverage
• Closes on pass catchers to limit yards after catch
• When asked to blitz does so fast and with power
• Doesn’t take a play off
• High motor
And some negatives:
• Sometimes gets caught at the second line
• Getting off of blocks is sub-par
• Injury prone 2 ACL tears
• Will be drafted at 24, so he will be an older rookie
Even as an older rookie I feel he will have to earn a starting spot. He will not come into camp and start day one but has the potential to start eventually.
He would play better in a 3-4 scheme BUT if for some reason Joe Schobert went down, Tranquill would be able to step in and at least stop the bleeding up the middle of the defense.
