Johnny Manziel ‘pulling for’ Baker Mayfield, other Cleveland Browns
By Dan Justik
Playing for the Cleveland Browns may not have worked out for Johnny Manziel, but the former Browns quarterback said he’s pulling for Baker Mayfield and other Browns.
The Cleveland Browns missed on their selection of 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, but they seemed to have hit on their selection of 2017 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield’s time with the Browns is already off to a better start than Manziel after just one season. Despite plenty of expectations, Manziel burned out in Cleveland and never generated much success with the Browns. And in one season, Mayfield has the Browns expecting to make the playoffs in 2019.
Even though Manziel only played for the Browns in his short time in the NFL, he said he is not a fan of any team in the league. However, he said Monday that he is “pulling for” several Browns, including Mayfield.

During the draft process, Mayfield was regularly being compared to Manziel based on their size and how they played. But after being selected by the Browns with the first overall selection in 2018 NFL Draft, Mayfield said he and Manziel were two completely different people.
There was also a connection made because of how much Manziel partied off the field. After Mayfield was arrested in 2017 for a public intoxication and fleeing charge, it opened up the possibility for people to say they had similar off-field concerns, even though that was the only issue Mayfield had.
Manziel also said that they were not the same people and players despite some of their similarities on the field. Manziel even wrote a letter to Mayfield to explain what he may face in Cleveland, but to also wish him nothing but success.
Manziel also played against Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry when he was with Texas A&M and the pair of receivers were playing for LSU. Beckham and Manziel also worked out together following the 2017 season.
Playing for the Cleveland Browns may not have ended well for Manziel, but he may be closely following how they play in 2019 because of the friends he has on the team. And after one season, Mayfield has already been able to silence the Manziel comparisons.
