Cleveland Browns News: Analytics hates the 2019 roster
By Randy Gurzi
The Daily Dawg Tags bring you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including an article that shows how little analytics thinks of this roster.
Fans of the Cleveland Browns are stoked about the prospects for 2019 due to the talent which has been added in the offseason. Players such as Odell Beckham, Jr., Olivier Vernon, and Sheldon Richardson have been added to a roster that already went 5-3 down the stretch last season.
While there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic, it seems as though not everyone is sharing that same sentiment. In a recent article, Nick Dudukovich of Factory of Sadness discusses how analytics is not a fan of the roster this season.
That story and more can be found in today’s Daily Dawg Tags.
Cleveland Browns News
"“Analytics aren’t being kind to the 2019 Cleveland Browns roster, ranking the unit 18th among the NFL’s 32 franchises. The compilation was done by analytically oriented site Pro Football Focus in an article for ESPN+ subscribers.”"
According to the article, the team was held back by some “below average” players which included Antonio Callaway, Genard Avery, and Christian Kirksey. There were several other names listed but it still feels like a low ranking.
"“Simply, the Browns haven’t seen a true successor to the throne the Wizard of Oz vacated when he retired after the 1990 season. That could soon change, perhaps more by a collective effort than by one individual. This Browns tight ends group is loaded.”"
David Njoku and Demetrius Harris are both expected to be key contributors in 2019, but the position is deeper than that. Orson Charles is an excellent blocker and Pharaoh Brown is an intriguing option as well. Then, of course, there’s still Seth DeValve who can make things happen in the receiving game.
Former RB Earnest Byner should be in the Hall of Fame
Our own Elliot Kennel points out the fact that former Browns running back Earnest Byner should be in the Hall of Fame. He was a do-it-all back who produced some fantastic seasons for a long time in the NFL.
Olivier Vernon has chance to shine in Cleveland Browns defense
Olivier Vernon’s addition hasn’t garnered near as much attention as did his former New York Giants teammate — Odell Beckham, Jr. — but he can still be a huge star for them in their defensive scheme.
