Did the Cleveland Browns trade away a future star?
The Cleveland Browns included Jabrill Peppers in their blockbuster mega-deal for Odell Beckham Jr. Although this looks like a small price to pay, some think Peppers could blossom in year three. Did the Browns trade away a future star?
Bleacher Report loves to call their shot when it comes to player-based predictions, and most recently, former Cleveland Browns safety Jabrill Peppers has been an object of BR’s affection. In an article published on Monday morning, Brad Gagnon predicted that both Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and former Browns safety Jabrill Peppers are destined for stardom this year.
Despite a solid sophomore campaign, Jabrill Peppers’ college talents never materialized in Cleveland. Whether it was the scheme, the coaching, or just Peppers himself, there always felt like there was something missing from his game when he was on the field.
Not only that, but this was a trade that the Browns needed to make; even if Peppers does reach stardom in 2019, the Browns have already gotten the better end of the deal.
By packaging Peppers in with their first round and third round picks, the Browns were able to secure perhaps the biggest offensive superstar in the NFL. Cleveland ripped Odell Beckham Jr. away from the New York Giants (at a relatively low price) and added to their already loaded up offense.
The Dawg Pound has been craving a true No. 1, star receiver for nearly two decades, and now they finally have one, with a great young quarterback to throw to him.
Perhaps the Browns did trade away a future star at the strong safety position in Jabrill Peppers. However, the likelihood of Peppers being as impactful a player as Odell Beckham Jr. is extremely slim. While the Browns do have a hole at strong safety now, it’s clear that they like the direction they are going in right now.
Nabbing Odell Beckham Jr. was the goal for general manager John Dorsey, and he was willing to go all in for the grand prize if he had to.
