Former NFL WR says Cleveland Browns have best WR duo in the NFL
By Dan Justik
The Cleveland Browns upgraded their offense with the addition of Odell Beckham Jr., and a former wide receiver believes the Browns have the best wide receiver duo in the NFL.
The Cleveland Browns offense is expected to be one of the most exciting offenses in the NFL in 2019, mostly because of the potential of their passing game.
In Freddie Kitchens’ offense last season, quarterback Baker Mayfield looked extremely comfortable and was able to make throws all over the field. That also included many explosive plays downfield that were not being completed earlier in 2018.
Mayfield excelled last season with the Browns not featuring a true No. 1 receiver. Instead, Mayfield distributed the ball to multiple receivers, often completing passes to at least six receivers during games.

But Mayfield will not have the issue of not having a No. 1 wide receiver in 2019 after the addition of Odell Beckham Jr. in the offseason. With Beckham, the Browns now have one of the top wide receivers in the NFL.
Beckham has excelled as an outside receiver and can make plays at all levels of the field. In his five-year career, Beckham has topped 1,000 yards every year except for 2017, which was the season he suffered a broken ankle and played in only four games.
Beckham will be joining his college teammate Jarvis Landry, who was put into the No. 1 receiver role last season despite fitting better as a slot receiver. But with the two paired together, they are one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. And former NFL wide receiver and current NFL Network analyst James Jones believes they are the best wide receiver duo in the NFL.
"With the former LSU teammates in the same locker room again, the Browns boast arguably the best slot receiver in the game in Landry and one of the top perimeter receivers in Beckham. Landry and Beckham are one of only three current WR duos to have each logged 100-catch seasons in their careers — joining them are Minnesota’s Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen (I’ll get to them in a minute) and New England’s Julian Edelman and Demaryius Thomas. – Jones, NFL.com"
Jones points out that both receivers have reliable hands and can make tough catches, but he also mentions how they both excel at creating separation off the line of scrimmage. And Jones believes because of their strong route running, the duo “won’t waste any time racking up yardage for one of the most exciting offenses in the league.”
The duo’s presence will play a major role in the effectiveness of Cleveland’s offense. Because Beckham can make plays all over the field and Landry is not afraid to make catches in tight windows in the middle of the field, defenses have to pay attention where they are on the field at all times.
With defenses putting extra attention on Beckham and Landry, it will create bigger windows and more opportunities for receivers like Rashard Higgins and Antonio Callaway, as well as tight end David Njoku. Easier throws for Mayfield will help him pick apart defenses and help the offense move down the field.
Adding a top-tier receiver like Beckham is going to make any offense better. But being able to pair him with a receiver like Landry will take the Browns offense to the next level in 2019 and potentially make them one of the best offenses in the NFL.
