Daily Dawg Tags: Jamie Gillan ‘wowing’ Cleveland Browns with his punts
By Dan Justik
The Daily Dawg Tags brings you all the Cleveland Browns news you need to know, including Jamie Gillan “wowing” the coaching staff with some of his punts.
The Cleveland Browns have one of the best punters in the NFL over the past several years on their roster with Britton Colquitt. But when the Browns start their punting sessions during training camp, it has been Jamie Gillan’s that is opening some eyes.
The Scottish Hammer may be from a small school, but that has not stopped his big leg from making some noise at Browns camp. And it has allowed him to be more than an afterthought in the competition to be Cleveland’s punter, fighting for a job against Colquitt.
Gillan has the power in his leg that special teams coaches dream about, which is why is he getting a chance with the Cleveland Browns.

Browns coach: Scottish Hammer Jamie Gillan ‘will wow you’ – Steve Doerschuk, CantonRep.com
"“Then, obviously, Jamie is going to wow you. Jamie is the guy that is going to bomb the ball.“Unfortunately, the next time he is up there he does not hit one quite as well. He needs to find consistency.”“Jamie will win the job if he is more consistent. Britton will win the job if he is obviously the guy that he has been in Cleveland.”"
With the Browns putting a greater emphasis on special teams this season, it is not a surprise they are going to challenge Colquitt with a punter who has a huge leg. Colquitt excels because of his consistency, but if Gillan can consistently make the ball glide through the air, it could become his job to lose.
Browns initial depth chart lacks returner options
The Cleveland Browns released their initial depth chart on Monday with a couple surprising placements of players. Elliot Kennel is concerned about the apparent lack of returners the Browns have entering their first preseason game.
"According to Freddie Kitchens, a common sound at the Browns’ training facility in Berea is Baker Mayfield and Garrett Gilbert comparing resumes. Kitchens calls it arguing. Gilbert calls it friendly banter."
The Browns have never had reliable quarterback depth on their roster, or even sometimes a starting caliber quarterback, but they could have a strong group in 2019. And with Baker Mayfield and Garrett Gilbert being familiar with each other from their high school days, they could be a great duo in the quarterback room for the future.
Browns rookie linebacker’s Sione Takitaki, Mack Wilson a perfect pairing?
The Browns doubled up on linebackers during the 2019 NFL Draft to address their need for depth at the position. But as a result, they may have drafted a perfect pairing of linebackers who could be the future of Cleveland’s middle of the defense.
