Dud: Austin Corbett

Things haven’t gone according to plan for Austin Corbett so far in his young career. The 33rd overall pick out of Nevada, Corbett was the odd pick out when talking about the Browns stellar draft in 2018. After taking Baker Mayfield first overall and Denzel Ward at No. 4, general manager John Dorsey then took the Nevada tackle with the first pick on the second day. Just two selections later, he took Georgia running back Nick Chubb.

Ward, Mayfield, and Chubb all had turns winning the NFL Rookie of the Week — and each was given the honor more than once. They were also all instrumental in their turnaround last season and are expected to be central figures that they build their team around. Corbett, on the other hand, has yet to find a position.

He worked at tackle in rookie minicamps before shifting inside to guard. This season, he had a shot at winning the right guard job, but that seems all but lost as he fell behind in that race quickly. Even so, it felt as though he found his niche as Corbett played well as the backup center in Week 1 of the preseason. In Week 2, that wasn’t the case.

In this game, he struggled mightily, especially when snapping the ball in the shotgun formation. He had back-to-back high snaps in his first drive and Gilbert had to leap to make the grab on both. At the 3:11 mark in the second quarter, he had another terrible snap that contributed to a play falling apart and which led to a punt.

The worst series for the second-year player came later in the game when he snapped the ball to David Blough with roughly seven minutes left in the game. It was a terrible snap and Blough had no choice but to take off and run once he was able to corral the snap. He gained a few yards but it didn’t matter as Corbett was also guilty of a holding penalty with was the icing on his bad day.
