3. Sheldrick Redwine

The Browns had a need at safety as they were nearing 2019 NFL Draft, but addressed it with a late free-agent signing of Morgan Burnett. The former Green Bay Packer was with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018 but was released after struggling to play the deep safety role. Now returning to his natural strong safety spot, he should thrive next to former Packers teammate Damarious Randall.

While that move helped them for this year, it wasn’t really a long-term answer. Burnett turned 30-years old this offseason so the Browns still needed to find someone younger who could handle the job down the road. With this goal in mind, they took Sheldrick Redwine out of Miami in the fourth round of the draft.

Redwine was a good defensive back with the Hurricanes and improved as a player every year. His best season was his senior campaign when he had 64 tackles, three sacks, and three interceptions. He proved to have a nose for the ball as he had five interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and three forced fumbles in his final two seasons.

All that being said, Redwine is a bit of a project. He needs to clean up his cover skills and so far in the preseason he’s had a few problems in this area. In Week 1, there was a miscommunication between him and fellow rookie Greedy Williams which allowed Robert Davis of the Redskins to run free for a 46-yard touchdown pass. On the broadcast, Williams was called out for not covering his guy, but defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was seen getting onto the safety following the play which suggests he was the one who should have been covering Davis deep.

On Saturday, he had another couple of other plays to forget. He was beat a couple of times when trying to cover tight end Eric Ebron and gave up a 12-yard score to the tight end in the first half. He was later called for a personal foul for lowering his helmet when he hit Ross Travis as he was scoring a touchdown off a pass from Chad Kelly.

Redwine was making some progress and could have found himself on the field earlier than expected had he continued to do so. Unfortunately, his play this past weekend may have hurt his chances at making a splash as a rookie.
