Cleveland Browns: 5 Questions to answer in Preseason Week 3
By Randy Gurzi
1. Can someone finally make a kick?
There was already plenty of speculation going around about the Browns kicking situation before The Scottish Hammer started drilling field goals in practice.
Freddie Kitchens has been fielding questions about the job security of both Greg Joseph and Austin Seibert, who each missed a kick in the Week 2 win over Indianapolis.
For Joseph, it was his second miss of the preseason as he wasn’t able to hit one of his extra-point tries in their opener against the Washington Redskins. For Seibert, it was his first miss but also his first field goal try as he had only attempted extra points up until then.
It’s a frustrating situation for Cleveland especially since they believed this was an issue that was in the past. After moving on from Zane Gonzalez following a Week 2 loss to New Orleans, they took a chance on Joseph and he had a good season overall.
Still, they felt they could upgrade with Seibert (Joseph was shaky on extra points), who they used a fifth-round pick on. So far, things haven’t worked out in the team’s favor but they’re not hitting the panic button yet.
Even though the team remains calm, Week 3 looms large for both kickers as they need to prove they can be counted on once the regular season begins
If both continue to struggle, it may be time to start kicking the tires on some free agents — or possibly making calls to some teams who have an extra kicker that they know won’t be taken into the regular season.
