AAF Legend Garrett Gilbert May Have Secured a Backup Spot
The quarterback situation, behind second-year star Baker Mayfield, is largely fluid. Drew Stanton came into the preseason as the incumbent backup to Mayfield, but he very well may have lost that spot over the course of the preseason. Instead, Alliance of American Football legend and eventual MVP Garrett Gilbert may have taken his spot.
Stanton has looked abysmal throughout the preseason as a whole, and Gilbert was able to start the fourth preseason effort, playing through the entire first half. Purdue product David Blough took the second half against the Lions, but it is abundantly clear that Gilbert should be the choice moving forward.
Gilbert will finish the preseason with 40 completions on 65 attempts for 403 and three touchdowns. With the Browns likely keeping three quarterbacks, they should be keeping Drew Stanton on the roster, which leaves Blough as the odd man out.
For the first time in two decades, Browns fans did not have to worry about a quarterback controversy this preseason. Baker Mayfield is the starter, and whoever the Browns decide to keep behind him is what’s really important here. Garrett Gilbert should be first in line, should something ever happen to Mayfield.
