The Cleveland Browns were expected to be looking at guards before the regular season, and they could have their answer with the acquisition of Wyatt Teller.

Before their final preseason game on Thursday, the Cleveland Browns made a trade that could affect their starting offensive line. The Browns announced they acquired guard Wyatt Teller and a 2021 seventh-round pick from the Buffalo Bills for two 2020 draft picks, a fifth-rounder and a sixth-rounder.

Teller was selected in the fifth-round of the 2018 NFL Draft and started the season as a reserve for the Bills. He started the final seven games of the season for Buffalo.

The 24-year-old received an overall grade of 56.1 from Pro Football Focus last season. He committed five penalties but allowed only eight pressures on 476 total snaps. Of his eight pressures allowed, he did not give up a sack.

Cleveland has had problems with finding their starter at right guard during training camp and the preseason. Although Eric Kush is getting the first chance at the job, he has not done enough to be completely solidified into the role. He has had issues during the preseason, leading to a lot of concern about his potential during the regular season.

Because of the issues at right guard, the Browns were expected to be in the market for a guard before teams made their final cuts to 53 players. The Browns struck early with their acquisition of Teller before cut down day on Saturday.

The decision by general manager John Dorsey to trade two draft picks for Teller is a sign that he wants to solidify the offensive line before the season. It also likely means that he is confident enough in Teller’s abilities that he was willing to give up multiple picks.

Even though Teller will not have much practice time with the Browns, he could potentially take over the starting right guard job right away. With more than a week until the first regular season game, there is time for Teller to get adjusted and learn the Browns offense.

The Browns may not be completely certain he could take over the starting job right away, but he will likely be the team’s answer if Kush struggles early on in the season. And with his age, he might be viewed as a long-term answer for the right guard job.

However, the addition of Teller could create a numbers crunch with the offensive line and it could lead to a surprising cut or trade. If Kush was the best of the group, he will likely be viewed as the backup guard following the trade. And if that is the case, Austin Corbett’s status on the roster could be in question.

This trade could result in a lot of answers for the Browns before the regular season begins. But by the looks of the trade, Teller appears to be in the Browns plans as a starter at right guard at some point in 2019.
