Dud: David Blough

The Browns sat Garrett Gilbert down following a great first half and allowed undrafted rookie David Blough to get some time on the field. Throughout the preseason, Blough has played very well, but that wasn’t the case on Thursday.

His first drive ended with an interception, which came on a pass that was a lame-duck as Blough was hit while he threw it. There’s a tendency to say that such a play isn’t on the quarterback, but this one was. Blough simply held the ball too long and didn’t sense the pass rush coming from his blindside.

Things didn’t get better on his next drive as Blough threw another pick on his very next pass. After Detroit came within a point following the first pick, Blough stepped back on a third-and-8 and threw the ball toward Derrick Willies only to see it picked off by Jamar Summers.

The young quarterback did end up settling down after the disastrous start and led the offense on a nine-play, 59-yard drive which ended in a touchdown run by Trayone Gray from two-yards out. On the drive, he hit Ishmael Hyman for 15 yards and 16 yards, He then found Gray for a 19 yard gain to get them in the red zone.

Blough shrugging off the picks to make some plays shows his incredible mental toughness. Being able to bounce back from that is great for any quarterback. The question now is whether he did enough to earn a spot on the practice squad.
