Su’a Cravens – Safety

Su’a Cravens was released by the Denver Broncos a day before cut down day, but could be an intriguing option for the Browns. Cravens hoped to make the Broncos as a safety/linebacker hybrid, but the Broncos wanted him to make the team as a pure defensive back, and he was unable to do so.

With the Browns expected to primarily play in a 4-2-5 defense, Cravens could fit well into the defense as the extra defensive back playing closer to the line of scrimmage.

Since being drafted in 2016, Cravens has only played 16 games in his career. He has dealt with various injuries since his rookie year, which even caused him to “retire” and miss the entire 2017 season.

In his career, Cravens has made 51 total tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, one interception and five passes defensed. During the preseason, Cravens made 10 total tackles and forced one fumble.

The Browns have been eyeing defensive backs who can play in the box and make plays against the run but still be reliable in coverage. Cravens checks those boxes and he could be an upgrade over some of the other safeties on the roster.

The Browns are already carrying 11 defensive backs, including six safeties, so it may not make sense to add another defensive back to the roster unless they release one from their current group.

But if the Browns feel Cravens can make an impact on special teams, as well as the defense in a depth role, he could be a potential fit with the Browns, especially in their “nitro” position on their defense.
