Cleveland Browns preseason star Damon Sheehy-Guiseppi is still unsigned with the majority of the roster spots settled for NFL practice squads.

Preseason star Damon Sheehy Guiseppi is still unsigned with roughly 90 percent of the roster spots settled for NFL practice squads. That’s not a good sign for those who want to see the unheralded and unwanted walk-on succeed in the NFL.

The practice squads are built in a matter of hours from the time that players clear waivers, i.e., 12 noon on Sunday, September 1 for the 2019 season. It sort of resembles a rugby scrum between the 32 NFL general managers. No one gets all of their top choices, and frankly, the speed and efficiency of the players’ agents are just as important as the ability of the players.

Sheehy-Guiseppi is the rookie who famously bluffed his way into getting a tryout by claiming to know Alonzo Highsmith of the Cleveland Browns front office. But then he ran a 4.38 40 yard dash and fielded several punts cleanly at the tryout and voila, he was on the preseason roster.

The first time he touched the ball in the preseason, he ran it back to the house and was buried under a pile of delirious Browns teammates.

The major blemish on his performance came in Week 4 versus the Lions when he mishandled a punt and then after regaining control fumbled it again. But he caught three passes thrown his way in the preseason and looked solid on his other returns.

Nevertheless, the Browns have Dontrell Hilliard to return punts, with D’Ernest Johnson, Antonio Callaway, and Jarvis Landry also available. The other players have important roles on offense, whereas Seehy-Guiseppi is very raw as a wide receiver. Hence he was cut.

His Instagram feed contains a picture of him with superstar Odell Beckham, Jr. and had an emotional thank you to the team that took a chance on him this preseason.

For his part, OBJ responded:

"“Since day one brother!  God has his eyes on u! Keep workin ! No one can out work u! Forever LUV.”"

Well wishes also came from D’Ernest Johnson, Chris Kirksey and many other appreciative teammates. He was clearly well-liked and respected by his teammates as well as Browns fans.

There is still some chance that he could appear on someone’s practice squad either immediately or during the season as the rosters get thinned due to injuries.

However, this is probably the time to put the player’s agent to work and investigate other opportunities in the Canadian Football League, or the new XFL which is scheduled to start in 2020, or even leagues in Europe and Asia.  The right agent could be immeasurably helpful in this situation.

Since Sheehy Guiseppi never played beyond junior college ball, he badly needs game reps.  If he were to excel, hypothetically,  in Canada and show that he is not a fumbler, he could still get his chance in the NFL.
