The soap opera with Antonio Brown and the Raiders ended Saturday with Brown’s release, but the Cleveland Browns should stay away from the embattled receiver.

The Cleveland Browns have not been afraid to add controversial players to their roster over the past couple of seasons, adding the likes of Kareem Hunt and Antonio Callaway. However, they should stay away from the most controversial player of the 2019 season so far, Antonio Brown.

Brown has been mired in controversy since being traded to the Oakland Raiders in March. Whether it be having feet problems because of cryotherapy, drama with his helmet, or simply being a distraction for the team, Brown has created plenty of drama in Oakland.

Despite being an ubertalented wide receiver, there have been questions surrounding Brown and his attitude for the past year or so. Although Brown says he wants to do whatever he can to improve a team, he has come off as a selfish player who has ultimately hindered the team he has been on.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were willing to trade Brown to the Raiders this offseason because of the issues he created in the locker room. Brown even showed he was not committed to his team during Week 17 of last season after he decided to go A.W.O.L during the week of a must-win game for the Steelers.

With all of the problems surrounding Brown over the past year, it is hard to imagine a team wanting to add the receiver to their locker room. But with organizations willing to do whatever they can to win games, there will be some teams who may be willing to deal with Brown’s chaos so they can add talent to their roster.

A team who has been known to do that is the Cleveland Browns, especially since John Dorsey took over as general manager. Dorsey is willing to take chances personnel wise if that means he can improve the roster. But in this case, Dorsey and the Browns need to stay away from Brown.

Cleveland has built a locker room of players who want to be Browns and are willing to do whatever it takes to earn the team a victory. The players are not afraid to hold each other accountable so they can reach their end goal.

But if they were to add Brown, they are adding a player who has been known to cause distractions for selfish reasons instead of doing what is necessary for the team. Cleveland has built a strong and committed locker room, so why add a player who could instantly create disruption?

The Browns may have the leaders who could rein in Brown and keep him under control. Baker Mayfield has proven to be a leader who players gravitate towards, and he could be a strong enough leader to keep Brown focused. However, Brown has shown that even when things are looking good, there is a problem that can be created.

Cleveland also has enough talent at wide receiver that adding Brown is not completely necessary. On the field, Brown’s talent would instantly make the Browns wide receiver corps the best unit in the NFL. But even without having Brown on the roster, Cleveland already has a top wide receiver corps with Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Rashard Higgins.

And even though Brown has been viewed as one of the best wide receivers in the league, the distractions he has caused has been a detriment to the Raiders on the field. According to NFL Network’s David Carr and brother of Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, Oakland’s practices have been better when Brown is not with the team.

Brown was viewed as a talent who would be hard to not consider adding to a roster if he ever became available. But after all of the distractions and issues he has caused over the past couple of months, Brown is likely more of a detriment to a team than a benefit.

Next. What a difference a year makes for the Browns. dark

Even though the Browns believe they have the resources to keep troubled players under control, Brown is a player who is not worth the risk. With the talent and unity the Browns already have in the locker room, adding Brown could instantly harm that. So John Dorsey and the Cleveland Browns should stay far, far away from Antonio Brown.
