The Cleveland Browns have not won their season opener since 2004. In a game against the Tennessee Titans that was filled with hope, the Browns laid a penalty-laden egg and will begin the season 0-1.

It is not unlike the Cleveland Browns to lose their season opener. Having not started a season 1-0 since the 2004 season, their record in winning to start the season has not been stellar. However, it is unlike these Cleveland Browns to get totally run over in a game where they had all the expectations in the world.

The Browns added so much talent over the offseason, a whirlwind of moves by general manager John Dorsey and the front office, and Browns mania was running wild for about six months. It was bound to come crashing down at some point if the team didn’t live up to expectations, but fans thought it was unlikely to come so soon.

Rookie head coach Freddie Kitchens started the game with a seemingly easy touchdown drive for second-year quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Browns’ offense. Running back Dontrell Hilliard scored the game’s first touchdown, and then, the Browns simply stalled.

A game that was supposed to be a celebration and the ringing in of a new era of Cleveland football ended with a whimper, as the Browns will have to pick themselves up for next Monday night against the Jets.

A furious collection penalty yards racked up over the course of the game, allowing the Tennessee Titans to capitalize in embarrassing fashion on the Browns. When all was said and done, the Titans defeated the Browns by a score of 43-13. Let’s get some instant reactions.
